Joe was drafted in 1959 and spent his entire term of duty at Fort Dietrich, which is a research facility. He would have liked to go overseas; however, he acknowledges that he learned a lot working with very bright people doing biological research, and this proved to be an advantage when he went to college to study biology and, eventually, go on to a career as an Avian Ecologist. In that regard, his service to his country also served him well.
